Plumbing in Spotswood: Underground Water Main Spot Repair, 4 to 5 Feet Down

The water main buried in the front yard was leaking. We dug down to the source and repaired that section of the line, so the house has a repaired main and the yard is filled back in.

We filed the permits and called for the mark-out before any digging. All the utilities run together in the front yard, so that step came first.

The excavation was no smaller than 10 feet across and roughly 4 to 5 feet deep, done with a machine and by hand. The meter inside the house is 3/4 copper, but the point where the line enters the house can’t be seen. The pipe size wasn’t known until we had dug down to it.

With the leak located, we made the repair using underground service fittings and pipe. Then we turned the water back on, bedded the area with sand, and backfilled the hole.

Questions about plumbing

What causes pinhole leaks in copper pipes?
Pinhole leaks usually come from corrosion that slowly eats through the pipe wall, from the inside or the outside. Water chemistry, high flow velocity and certain installation issues can contribute. Several pinholes in one system often point to widespread wear. The usual choices are to repair individual spots or to look at replacing the affected piping.
What should I do first if a pipe bursts?
Shut off the water at the main shutoff valve right away, then open faucets to drain the lines. If water is near outlets, cords or appliances, don't walk through it. Turn off the power at the breaker panel only if you can reach it while standing somewhere dry; otherwise call the electric utility. Move belongings out of the way, call a plumber, and take photos of the damage for your records.
What does adding a basement bathroom involve for the plumbing?
Drains work by gravity, so the key question is whether the basement is high enough above the sewer line to drain naturally. If it isn't, an upflush system or a sewage ejector pump can lift waste to the main drain. Water supply lines, venting and moisture control also need planning. Permits are decided locally.
