Questions about plumbing

How do I descale a tankless water heater and why does it matter?
Minerals from the water can build up inside the heat exchanger of a tankless unit and reduce its performance. Descaling circulates a mild acid solution through the unit, often vinegar or a manufacturer-approved product, using isolation valves and a small pump. How often it's needed depends on water hardness and use. Follow the manufacturer's instructions or have a plumber do it.
What does an expansion tank do?
When water is heated it expands, and in a closed plumbing system that extra volume has nowhere to go. An expansion tank has an air cushion that absorbs it and keeps pressure from spiking. Without one, spikes can strain fixtures, valves and the water heater. The tank's air charge should be checked and set to match the home's water pressure.
What plumbing steps should I take before leaving home for an extended trip?
Shut off the main water supply before you go. That limits the damage if a pipe or hose fails while you're away. Where pipes can freeze, keep the house heated enough to protect them in cold weather. Some people also lower the water heater setting or use its vacation mode. Check under sinks and around appliances for drips, and have someone look in occasionally.
